Be prepared!
Greece is located in an earthquake zone which means that earthquakes occur quite often. Usually they cause minor problems but we have to be prepared to avert the possible devastating results of an earthquake.
For those who are not familiar with this phenomenon please spend just a few minutes to read through the basic protection measures.
- Study the emergency plan of the place you are spending your vacation. Emergency plans are placed at the back of the door of your room and at the corridor of every floor.
- Locate emergency exits and staircases in order to learn how to evacuate your floor after a strong earthquake.
- Locate areas in your room and the building where you spend much of your time (e.g. the breakfast room) so that you can immediately protect yourself in case of an earthquake. Such locations are: under a sturdy desk or a table.
- Keep away from windows.
- Peek a nearby safe refuge such as a park or a square and agree to meet there with all family members even if you get lost with each other during the earthquake.
During an earthquake
- Stay calm, stay where you are, do not try to enter or exit a building
- Take cover under a sturdy wooden table or other furniture or even by the side of a bed. If no appropriate furniture is around crouch to the floor and protect your head with your arms; stay in this position until the shaking stops.
- If you are outdoors move away from building facades and utility wires, Cover your head with a briefcase or a purse.
- If you are driving keep on driving but slow down, if possible park your car so as not to block traffic. Avoid dangerous locations, such as tall buildings, traffic lights, bridges, etc.
- If you are in a mountainous area keep away from areas where landslides may occur or rocks may fall.
- If you are near shore leave immediately.
- The earthquake may cause a tsunami. In Greece, tsunamis are very rare but earthquake may cause damages to the jetty of the harbour.
What not do after an earthquake
Do not panic if an aftershock occurs it is common and expected.
Do not use the elevator.
Do not use telephones excessively.
Do not listen to rumours, they cause confusion.Get information from the authorities and follow their instructions
