Flooding during past years has been a common natural disaster for Greece.

If you are visiting Greece it is good to know that the center of Athens where most archaeological sites are located rarely floods.
If you are visiting the mainland you should pay attention while travelling near rivers and streams, and even in small creaks. Flooding along rivers can occur seasonally or by heavy rain. Rains that come in winter or spring combine with melting snow that can quickly fill river basins beyond capacity.

Please check out the meteorological conditions before attempting to do sports in mountains or rivers such as climbing or rafting.

Make sure you remember by heart all the necessary telephone numbers in case of emergency.

If heavy rain falls while you are exploring the city and you feel even the least threatened by the water level

Evacuate to an area of higher ground immediately

Stay away from flooded areas, until authorities allow access

Do not walk, swim or drive through moving water the objects that have been dragged can hurt you

Until everything is back to normal use only flashlights, turn electricity off at the fuse box, check for any kind of gas link and use bottled water.
